The Basics to Learning Piano


Learning to play the piano can be a very exciting journey! However, when you don’t know where to start it can be overwhelming. Here are some beginner-friendly techniques to help you get started quickly and have fun along the way.


Sit correctly: This is a very overlooked lesson and it can go a long way. Sit up straight with your feet touching the floor for better posture and hand position. Rest your hand on the keys and make sure to keep your wrists straight and elbows bent at 90 degrees.

Hand position: Curve your fingers slightly and rest them on the keys. Use finger numbers; for the right hand (the thumb is 1, pinky is 5) and for your left hand (the pinky is 1, thumb is 5)


Basic rhythm: Clap or tap your foot to establish a steady beat. It is always best to start with 4/4 timing, the most common timing in all Western music. Each tap is 1 beat… 1, 2, 3 ,4 and repeat


Hand independence: Practice playing different melodies or rhythms with each hand to improve coordination. The key is to practice and focus on each hand separately, then dedicate some time to work on both hands together!


Practice regularly: Set aside dedicated practice time each day to build muscle memory and improve your skills. The most important lesson when learning piano is consistently practice and work on techniques. The best advice is to practice as many days in a week as you can. It sounds like a lot but even just 10 minutes per day is better than practicing 1 hour only 1 day.


Enjoy your piano journey! Remember to sit correctly, practice finger placement, start with individual notes, follow the rhythm, develop hand independence, and practice regularly. With time and dedication, you'll become a confident pianist. Small steps make for great leaps!
